Baby Teeth Q & A

When should I start caring for my baby's teeth?

You should start caring for your baby's teeth and gums even before teeth emerge. Wipe down the gums gently, using a soft, damp cloth, especially after feedings and before bed. This eliminates milk sugars that can provide a ready food source for harmful bacteria.

Once the first teeth begin to emerge, you can switch to a soft brush designed especially for infants. A very tiny amount of toothpaste can be used to clean teeth and begin to provide some fluoride protection; use a very minimal amount and wipe the area with a cloth afterward until your child is old enough to rinse and spit.

At what age should my child see the dentist?

Ideally, you should take your baby to the dentist for an evaluation when the first tooth emerges, or at least by his or her first birthday. Seeing the dentist at a young age helps ensure problems are caught early, especially issues that could have an impact on your child's ability to speak properly or get proper nutrition.

An early visit allows the dentist to examine your baby's gums and jaw structure and provide you with the important information you need to help your child enjoy a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

How can I help ensure my child's teeth will be healthy?

Initiate a program of regular dental care including proper brushing and flossing while your child is very young, and see the dentist regularly.

By making these activities part of the child's regular routine, you can eliminate anxiety and lay the groundwork for a lifetime of good oral health. Offer lots of healthy snacks and model good snacking behavior so it will be easier for your child to develop good habits.
